However, the Lyon Court has not recognized its chief is yet.The term "Blair" is the genitive of a gaelic word, "Blar"that stands for field or battle field. The Blair Castle was the seat of the Blair Clan for more than 800 years. The Blair name was used to spell in 16 different ways but with the passage of time only 3 survived that are in use now.The three names that have survived are Blair, McBlair and Bleher.The name Blair is derived from the Gaelic ‘Blar’ meaning open space or field, and consequently can be found in many different place names across Scotland. It was originally spelled ‘Blare’ but this form of the name has long since died out.
Blair is probably of Norman origin or from a barony near Upall, West Lothian. There is a document witnessed by Stephen de Blare 1204 for the monastery of Arbroath.The name appears in a number of regions in the medieval period namely Renfrew,Ayr, Wigtown, Perth, Fife and Angus.
